Waking up early is a good habit anyone can form. It doesn’t matter whether you are a morning person or not. Once you develop the habit of waking up on time, it becomes part of you. I know you are here because you’ve been struggling to wake up early, at least at 5 am every day. Today, I will be sharing with you, the best tips that will help you to wake up at any given time you want.

I hardly sleep at night. This was the habit I formed during my secondary school days. I used to wake up by 1 am and read till 5 am, then prepare for school. As this went on, I started waking up on my own even without setting an alarm. Today, I can sleep for one hour and wake up the next hour to do whatever I want without feeling exhausted. You too can develop this habit.

If you have been finding it hard to wake up at 5 am, here are some tips that will help you to start waking up early in the morning with new energy.

How To Wake Up At 5 AM And Not Be Tired

1. Eat light food for dinner

Do you know why you often feel exhausted when you wake up in the morning? Most times is a result of the type of food you consumed last night. Food that is rich in carbohydrates will drain you and will not allow you to rise even when your alarm rings. So, the first step to waking up at 5 am daily without feeling tired or lazy is to eat light food before going to bed.

2. Get to bed on time

Early to bed, early to rise. There’s no other magic you can do to wake up at 5 am if not going to bed on time. Consider sleeping by 9 or 10 pm so that before 5 am, you’re already tired of snoring or rolling on your bed. If you sleep by 10 pm, at 5 am you have already slept for 7 hours which is enough for you to wake up without feeling exhausted.

3. Consider setting an alarm

As you are still trying to form the habit of waking up by 5 am, you can’t do that on your own. You need somebody or a machine to wake you up at that time. Setting an alarm is not a problem (I know that is what is going on in your mind right now). Maybe you always set a reminder (alarm) but always feel tired to rise when the alarm rings. It is normal. We all experience that. But here is a new strategy I want to teach you. It has been working for me. Consider setting your alarm 4 to 5 times before 5 am.

For instance, you want to wake up at 5 in the morning, and you have to set your alarm about 4 times before 5 am. Here’s how to break it down. Set the first alarm by 4:40 am, 2nd- 4:50 am, 3rd- 4:55 am, 4th-5:00 am, and the final one at 5: 05 am. Before all these alarms could finish ringing, you’re already awake.

4. Remind yourself why you should wake up early

Most times we sleep off when we feel like we don’t have any crucial thing to do the next day. Reminding yourself that you have an important thing to do or a meeting to attend by 6 or 7 am will motivate you to wake up even if you don’t feel like it.

Have you ever thought of travelling the next day, maybe through the flight, and you wanted to wake up by 4 or 5 am? Do you often sleep like the normal way you do when you have no place to go the next day? I guess you sleep a little, simply because you don’t want to miss your flight. That is how it also works when you want to wake up early. Just have some goals in mind you want to actualize the next day.

5. Ask someone to wake you up

There are times you can’t help yourself to wake up early. You need someone to help wake you up. Consider asking your partner, your kids or even your friend to call you by 5 am to enable you to rise.

Marble jar

6. Try the marble jar method

The basic idea of this method is that you start with an empty jar, and you add marbles to reward yourself each day you wake up early. I have never used this method before but those who have said it works. So, give it a try.

7. Avoid sleeping where you will feel too relaxed

Most times, if I want to wake up one hour after I have slept, I try lying or sleeping on a chair instead of lying in the bed. The reason is that I will feel too comfortable if I sleep on the bed than sleeping on a chair.

There is an alternative to this method. If you want to wake up by 5 am to do something very crucial and you don’t want to sleep off, avoid dressing your bed and lying on it that way. It will make you not feel too relaxed or even dose off.

8. Practice listening to music

This method works for a lot of people. All you need is to just turn on your music and sleep. But don’t make use of airpod or earpiece as this can have some medical effects on you.

9. Have a daily morning routine

Morning routines like praying, meditating, and exercising yourself will make waking up at 5 am easier.

10. Make up your mind to wake up early the next day

This habit works for me. Anytime I want to wake up on time, I will always have in mind that my target is to wake up early. Each time I mistakenly wake up at night, I will always remember my plan (waking up early). This helps me to control my sleep.
